Arche de la Défense
Back to all places
Standing as an iconic testament to modern architecture in the heart of Puteaux, the Grande Arche de la Défense was inaugurated in 1989 to commemorate the bicentennial of the French Revolution. The Grande Arche is part of the historic Axe Historique, a line of monuments that stretches from the Louvre to the suburbs of Paris, displaying a unique blend of modern and classical design.
The 110-meter cube embodies a cosmopolitan vision, signifying the realm of human rights and offering a unique vantage point over the Parisian skyline. This resides in one of Europe’s largest business districts and hosts numerous events and exhibitions. Its roof terrace presents epic panoramic views.
Commonly referred to as the Arche de la Défense or simply La Grande Arche, this 110-meter-high (360 ft) cube is aligned with the perspective stretching from the Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe. The distance between La Grande Arche and the Arc de Triomphe is 4 km (2.5 miles).
The Axe historique (Historical Axis) is a straight alignment of landmarks in Paris that stretches from the Louvre to the La Défense business district in the west. Also known as the "Triumphal Way", it connects several iconic monuments and sites, including the Louvre, the Tuileries Garden, Place de la Concorde, Champs-Élysées, Arc de Triomphe, and the Grande Arche of La Défense. The axis symbolizes Paris’s architectural and historical evolution through the centuries.
