Arènes de Lutèce

The Arènes de Lutèce stands as an interesting remnant of the city’s ancient Roman past. Paris was known in antiquity as Lutetia. Constructed in the 1st century AD, this amphitheater once echoed with the cheers of crowds gathered to witness gladiatorial combat and theatrical performances. With a seating capacity of up to 15,000 spectators, it was one of the largest amphitheaters in Roman Gaul. Over the centuries, the arena fell into obscurity, buried beneath the expanding city, until its rediscovery in the 19th century during the construction of Rue Monge.

Today, it is a public square, visitors can stroll through its historic grounds, imagining the vibrant spectacles that once took place here.
