Café Procope
Back to all places
Established in 1686, Le Procope proudly holds the title of the oldest café in Paris. It’s also the oldest cafe in Europe. Over the centuries, this iconic establishment has been a cherished gathering place for some of the most illustrious figures in history. It was here that the likes of Voltaire, Rousseau, and Benjamin Franklin sipped their coffee and engaged in spirited discussions that shaped the intellectual landscape of their time. The café became a hub for philosophers and revolutionaries alike.
Fun fact: Napoléon Bonaparte left his tricorn hat as collateral at Le Procope because he didn’t have enough money to pay for his lunch. The hat remained there and has since become almost a museum item, drawing many visitors who come specifically to see and photograph it. At Le Procope, you can also see Marat’s bell. When Marat sat there writing his passionate texts, a small bell hung by his table under the window. Whenever he finished a piece, he would ring the bell, and someone from the publishing house would arrive to quickly take his manuscript for publication.
Cafés opulent interiors, adorned with period décor, transport visitors back to an era of elegance and sophistication. Today, Café Procope continues to enchant visitors with its rich tapestry of history and culture, offering an experience that pays homage to its storied past.
