Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés

The Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is one of the city’s oldest and most revered religious edifices, with its origins tracing back to the 6th century. Founded by the Merovingian King Childebert I in 558 AD, it was initially established as an abbey for the relics of the Holy Cross and Saint Vincent. It was destroyed by the Vikings, rebuilt, and renamed in the 8th century for Saint Germain, a 6th-century bishop.

The church has undergone various restorations, each adding layers to its architectural splendor. Its Romanesque bell tower, one of the few remaining in Paris, stands as a testament to its enduring legacy.

Inside, visitors can marvel at the stunning frescoes and stained glass windows that illuminate the church. Legend has it that beneath its floors lie the remains of several French monarchs, adding an air of mystery and intrigue. Today, it continues to be a place of worship and a cherished landmark, inviting visitors to step back in time and experience the serene beauty of this historic gem.
