La station de métro Abbesses
Back to all places
Nestled in the heart of Montmartre, the Abbesses metro station is a jewel of Parisian charm and history. Opened in 1912, it is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the Paris Métro network. It’s also the deepest, descending over 36 meters (118 feet) underground, with platforms located 144 steps below ground!
The entrance is a stunning example of Art Nouveau design, crafted by Hector Guimard, whose work has become synonymous with the elegance of the Paris Métro. As you make your way down the spiral staircase, you are greeted by vibrant murals that capture the bohemian spirit of Montmartre. Though there’s always the option to take the elevator.
The station is named after the Abbesses district, which was once home to a convent of Benedictine nuns. Legend has it that the nuns secretly assisted local artists, fostering the creative community that Montmartre is famous for today. A stone’s throw away from the iconic Sacré-Cœur Basilica, Abbesses station is a gateway to the artistic soul of Paris, where the echoes of famous artists like Picasso and Van Gogh still linger in the air. A visit to Abbesses is like stepping back in time to the vibrant days of the Belle Époque.
