Sorbonne Chapel

The Sorbonne Chapel, Chapelle Saint-Ursule de la Sorbonne, is the chapel of the University of Sorbonne. It was originally built in the 13th century. The layout of this chapel with its various paving stones can be seen in the main courtyard of the historic Sorbonne complex. The current building was constructed between 1635 and 1642 following the wishes of Cardinal Richelieu, who was Sorbonne’s rector at the time. This splendid edifice exemplifies the classical French Baroque style.

Created at the behest of Cardinal Richelieu, it was intended to serve as the final resting place for the Cardinal himself. His tomb remains at the center of the chapel’s interior. This masterpiece was sculpted by François Girardon in 1694. According to tradition, a red Cardinal’s hat is said to be suspended above the mausoleum, representing Richelieu’s honored rank and enduring legacy.
